Nowhere Better than Roundup Montana

Nestled in a picturesque valley near the Musselshell River and Bull Mountains, Roundup is the vibrant heart of Musselshell County in Southeast Montana. Named for its history as a natural gathering spot for cattle roundups, the town’s story took off in the late 1800s. When coal was discovered in 1907 and the railroad arrived, Roundup transformed from a quiet ranching community into a bustling hub, shaped by the unique blend of cowboys and coal miners who made it home.

Nowhere Better to See History Up Close

For history buffs, Roundup is a treasure trove waiting to be discovered. The Musselshell Valley Historical Museum, housed in the former St Benedict’s parochial school, brings the past to life. Trust us - this isn't your typical "look-but-don't-touch" museum.

Step into a replica coal mining tunnel, complete with wooden car, carbide lamps, and lunch pails that'll make your brown bag look downright fancy. The exhibits tell the story of Roundup's birth, from its ranching roots to its coal-fueled boom. But that's not all - you'll also find:

  • Fascinating fossils (because who doesn't love dinosaurs?)

  • Local Plains Indian artifacts that give clues to what life was like for them

  • Paintings by local artists that capture the beauty of our slice of Montana

  • Special rooms showcasing the old Rothiemay Store and post office, a one-room rural school, a dressmaker shop and original operating rooms of the original  Vicars Hospital

Nowhere Better for Epic Adventures

Hiking and Recreation

Out here, adventure isn't just a hobby - it's a way of life. The RiverWalk offers a scenic trail that winds along the Musselshell River and through the towering cottonwood trees. Pro Tip: Visit in the fall to experience breathtaking golden autumn colors.

The Musselshell River isn't just a pretty face – its a great fishing destination. Whether you're an experienced angler or just learning to cast, there's nothing better than spending a quiet morning trying to outsmart the local trout and catfish. Keep an eye out for the oblong mussels that gave the river its name. These "jewels of the Musselshell" are nature's own treasure hunt.

Wildlife Watching

Just 8 miles north of Roundup, the Lake Mason National Wildlife Refuge is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts. Keep your binoculars handy for:

  • Long-billed curlews and upland sandpipers (bird watchers, rejoice!)

  • Sage grouse strutting their stuff

  • Pronghorn antelope sprinting across the plains

  • A variety of raptors soaring overhead

And if you're really lucky, you might spot some elk passing through on their way to or from the Little Snowy Mountains. It's like a real-life nature documentary, right in our backyard.

Visit Southeast Montana

When autumn paints the Bull Mountains gold, Roundup transforms into a hunter's paradise. Experienced local outfitters know every nook and cranny of this terrain, and they're ready to guide you to where the deer and antelope really do play. Just remember - out here, the stories are as big as the Montana sky!

While Montana is known for big game, hunters shouldn’t overlook the opportunity in over-the-counter licenses for migratory and upland birds. Unlike big game permits, which depend on a draw, these licenses are readily available—just pack your gear and go. Montana’s rolling prairies and wetlands offer unmatched bird hunting, with upland birds thriving in grain fields and prairies. The most popular game bird is the ring-necked pheasant, alongside grouse, partridge and even turkey.

Stargazing

Horsethief Recreation Area, nestled in Montana's Bull Mountains, offers the perfect setting for stargazing, far from city lights. With two access points—one ideal for stargazing—this remote landscape invites visitors to pitch a tent and enjoy the pristine night skies. This location is featured on Montana’s Trail To The Stars. Remember, it's a pack-in, pack-out area, so help preserve the beauty of this wild land while you take in the stars above.
